Who runs this, and what for
| Team | What they decide with it |
|---|---|
| PR and content teams | Which publications, review sites, and communities to pitch, ranked by how often AI answers rely on them. |
| SEO teams | Which comparison and list pages the category's answers are built from, and where the brand's own pages already count. |
| Partnerships | Which directories and marketplaces are worth a listing because AI answers cite them. |
The calls, step by step
1. ChatGPT answer
GET /v1/chatgpt
2. Google AI Mode answer
GET /v1/google-ai-mode
1. Ask the category's questions
Use comparison and recommendation questions, the ones that make an answer list products: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X". Ask each on ChatGPT and AI Mode, two or more times.

The page on chatgpt.com that this call reads, as a signed-out visitor sees it. The response below is what Clair returns from it. GET /v1/chatgpt?q=best+project+management+software+for+small+teams · answer.citations.0
{ "position": 1, "title": "Visit Asana", "url": "https://asana.com/", "domain": "asana.com" }Recorded response. Live values differ. 2. Count cited sites per answer
Group answer.citations by domain and count each domain once per answer, so a site cited four times in one answer counts once. Divide by the number of answers: the share of answers that rely on a site is what to rank by.

Live values differ. 3. Mark the answers without you
Check answer.text for the brand. A site cited mostly in answers that leave the brand out is a source recommending competitors: being added to that comparison, review, or thread is the most direct way into the answers.
GET /v1/google-ai-mode?q=best+project+management+software+for+small+teams · answer.text
"The best project management tools for small teams focus on reducing administrative overhead, maximizing collaboration, and keeping workflows visible. Depending on your team's specific dynamic, technical background, and budget, the top tools group into distinct categories. 👥 The \"All-Rounder\" Industry Standards If you want a tool that can scale as you grow and has broad team buy-in, these are the most reliable choices: monday.com : Best overall starting point for straightforward and structured tracking . To narrow down the perfect option, tell me a bit more about your team: How many team members will be using it? What type of work do you do? (e.g., creative, software development, general operations) Do you need features like time tracking or client-sharing portals?"Recorded response. Live values differ.

Set CLAIR_API_KEY to your Clair key; one plan covers the ChatGPT API and Google AI Mode API. Each call spends that API's rate from the plan's monthly balance.

What to plan for
- A citation shows a page the answer linked, not every page the model read. Sources it used without linking are not visible to anyone outside.
- Google's product cards, a product's name linked to some page that mentions it, are not counted as citations.
- ChatGPT sometimes names a source by its site only. Those count toward the domain but have no page url.
- Cited sites change as answers change. Rerun monthly rather than treating one list as fixed.
Common questions
Why do AI answers cite Reddit and YouTube so often?
They hold first-hand comparisons for almost every product question, and both ChatGPT and Google cite them heavily for recommendation questions. Whether they lead your category's list is what this pipeline measures.
Should I count Google AI Overviews too?
You can add /v1/google-ai-overview to the engines. Overviews appear on some searches only, so expect fewer answers per question, and skip the ones that come back null.
Is being cited the same as being recommended?
No. A brand's own site can be cited for a fact, such as pricing, while the answer recommends a competitor. Count mentions in the text and citations apart.
