Generative engine optimization (GEO)
What Generative engine optimization (GEO) means
Search engine optimization aims for a position in a list of results. An AI answer has no list to rank in: it names a few products and links a few sources, and is written anew each time. GEO aims to be among them, for the questions a brand's buyers ask.
Much of it is familiar SEO and PR work aimed at different targets. AI answers draw on pages that rank, and on sources such as review sites, comparison articles, and forum threads. Being in the sources an answer cites, and having pages that state plainly what a product is, does, and costs, are the main levers.
Because every answer is a sample, GEO is measured as a rate: how often the brand is named, and how often its site is cited, across many askings of a fixed set of questions. That rate is AI visibility.

]Common questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. AI answers lean on pages that already rank, and Google's AI features sit on top of its normal results. GEO adds the answer itself, and the sites it cites, to what is tracked.
How do I find what to work on?
Ask the category's questions, count which sites the answers cite, and look at the ones cited in answers that leave the brand out. Those pages are where to be reviewed or listed.
