Associated Press API
AP section hubs, topic hubs, or site search, then one article.
Overview
What teams build with the Associated Press API
Topic monitoring
Follow an AP topic hub, such as a country, company, or election, and pull each new story in full.
News apps and briefings
Build a daily briefing from AP's world, business, or politics sections.
Research and retrieval
Search apnews.com for a subject and collect the article text for analysis or a retrieval index.
Licensed feeds only
Is there an official Associated Press API?
Only for AP customers. AP's Media API serves the content an organization licenses, with a key issued by AP customer support.
AP's Media API is how newsrooms that license AP content pull it into their systems. Keys come from AP customer support to licensed customers; there is no self-serve plan.
Clair reads the public apnews.com pages: section hubs, topic hubs, and site search, then one article per request. Listing cards carry no bylines, so read the article for the byline and body.
Read from these pages on September 28, 2026.

Code
Integrate in minutes
One host, one Bearer key for every Clair API. Each call returns JSON with the same envelope, so a second API is a new path, not a new client.
curl -G "https://api.clair.im/v1/ap/search?q=hurricane&sort=newest&page=1" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
Reference
Query and response fields
Pass q, section, or topic, not several. Search pages with page (1 to 20) or cursor. A section or topic hub is one page, so it takes neither. Listing authors[] is empty. Search cards carry a summary; section and topic cards rarely do.

Can I search AP by keyword?
Yes. Search takes q for apnews.com site search, or a section or topic hub to list instead.
Can I republish AP articles?
Clair gives you the data; the rights stay with AP. Republishing AP stories needs an AP license. Analysis, monitoring, and linking are the usual uses.
Why do listings include unrelated stories?
Section pages mix in right-rail and most-read cards, and Clair returns them as the page shows them. Filter by URL or section if you need only the hub's own stories.
What does the Associated Press API return?
Two endpoints, one subscription. Search reads a section (world-news default), an apnews.com/hub topic, or site search. Listing cards have no bylines. Section pages mix in right-rail/most-read cards. Article reads one apnews.com story. access is always free. Same document as Bloomberg and Reuters.
Which endpoints does a plan include?
All of them: World news, Article. Each call spends this API's rate from your plan's balance.
How is a request counted?
Each call is one request, and each extra page is a new call. A malformed request (400) is not counted, and a request that fails on our side (5xx) is refunded.
Is there a free tier?
Yes. The free tier is $1 of usage a month across every Clair API, with no card: about 232 Associated Press API requests if it all goes here. It resets monthly, and calls stop when the balance runs out.
What happens when I use up my plan's balance?
The API returns 429 until the next period, on every plan, and nothing is billed past the balance. An upgrade starts a new month at once, and the unused balance carries over.
Does my plan cover other Clair APIs?
Yes. One plan and one key cover every Clair API, and every call spends from the same monthly balance. Your first call starts the free tier.
