Is this the OpenAI API?

No. The OpenAI API is for building with OpenAI's models. This API asks chatgpt.com, the app people use, and returns its answer, to measure what ChatGPT tells them.

Which model answers?

The one chatgpt.com gives a signed-out visitor, with web search on: the answer most people get.

Why does the same question give a different answer each time?

ChatGPT writes each answer anew, so the brands it names and the sites it cites change between askings. Nothing is cached; ask a question several times and count how often a brand appears.

Why do some citations have no url?

ChatGPT sometimes names a source by its site only, as a small pill under a paragraph. Those come back with domain set and url null.

How long does a request take?

ChatGPT streams its reply for 10 to 30 seconds, and a request waits for all of it. Set your client timeout to two minutes.

Can I ask from another country?

Yes: country takes a two-letter code, such as gb or de. Ask in the language people there use.

What does the ChatGPT API return?

Asks chatgpt.com a question signed out, with web search on, the way most people use it, and returns the answer they would read and every site it links. Answers change from one asking to the next, so nothing is cached: ask a question several times and count how often a brand is named or a site is cited. A reply streams for 10 to 30 seconds, and a request waits for all of it.

How is a request counted?

Each call is one request, and each extra page is a new call. A malformed request (400) is not counted, and a request that fails on our side (5xx) is refunded.

Is there a free tier?

Yes. The free tier is $1 of usage a month across every Clair API, with no card: about 86 ChatGPT API requests if it all goes here. It resets monthly, and calls stop when the balance runs out.

What happens when I use up my plan's balance?

The API returns 429 until the next period, on every plan, and nothing is billed past the balance. An upgrade starts a new month at once, and the unused balance carries over.

Does my plan cover other Clair APIs?

Yes. One plan and one key cover every Clair API, and every call spends from the same monthly balance. Your first call starts the free tier.
