Definition

What Funding round means

Startups raise money in rounds. Each round has a type, such as seed or Series A, a date, an amount, and a set of investors, and later rounds are usually larger. Databases such as Crunchbase record rounds from announcements and filings.

The number and type of rounds, and the most recent one, say where a company is in its life: a company that just closed a Series A is hiring and buying; one that has not raised in years may be profitable or struggling.
