RSS feed
A file a website publishes listing its newest items, each with a title, link, and date, for feed readers and software to follow.
What RSS feed means
RSS is an XML format for a list of a site's latest items: articles, episodes, or posts. A feed reader checks the feed regularly and shows what is new, so a reader can follow many sites without visiting them. Podcasts are distributed the same way.
Google News still publishes RSS feeds for searches and topics, at addresses such as news.google.com/rss/search?q= followed by the query. They return a limited number of items, and their links go through Google rather than to the publisher. Many news sites have dropped their own feeds or stopped updating them.
Clair's Google News API returns the same searches and topics as JSON, with the publisher's own url, source, and publish time for each headline.
