HTTP status code
The three-digit number a server returns with every response, saying whether the request worked: 200 for success, 404 for not found, 429 for too many requests.
What HTTP status code means
Status codes come in five classes: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirection, 4xx client errors, and 5xx server errors. The first digit is usually enough to decide what to do next.
The codes a scraper sees most
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | OK | Parse the page; a block page can also return 200, so check the content |
| 301, 302, 308 | Moved, the page is at another URL | Follow the redirect and store the final URL |
| 403 | Forbidden | Often a block of automated traffic, not a missing page |
| 404 | Not found | The page is gone; stop requesting it |
| 429 | Too many requests | Slow down; wait as long as Retry-After says |
| 500, 502, 503 | Server error or unavailable | Retry later with a growing delay |
How it appears in a response
GET /v1/scrape?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.ycombinator.com%2F · page.status
200Common questions
Can a blocked request return 200?
Yes. Many sites answer automated traffic with a 200 and a challenge or CAPTCHA page, so a scraper should check that the page holds what it expects, not only the status.
