What Engagement rate means
Engagement rate measures how much of an audience responds to what an account posts. The most common public formula is engagement by followers: the average likes plus comments per post, divided by the follower count. Some versions add shares and saves where a network shows them.
Account owners can also calculate it by reach or impressions, dividing by how many people actually saw a post. Those figures appear only in the owner's own dashboard, so anyone measuring an account from the outside, such as a brand vetting a creator, uses followers.
The rate falls as accounts grow, so it is meaningful only next to accounts of similar size in the same niche. A follower count that jumps without a matching rise in likes and comments is a common sign of bought followers.
How to calculate engagement rate
| Method | Formula | Who can calculate it |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | (average likes + average comments per post) ÷ followers | Anyone, from public counts |
| By reach | interactions on a post ÷ accounts that saw it | The account owner |
| By impressions | interactions on a post ÷ times it was shown | The account owner |

35200Common questions
Should I include pinned posts?
No. Pinned posts sit at the top of a profile and are often old, with years of likes. Average the newest posts by date.
What if an account hides likes?
Instagram lets authors hide like counts. Leave those posts out of the average instead of counting them as zero.
