What Pay transparency means

Pay transparency laws require employers to state a salary range in job postings or share it with applicants. In the United States, Colorado's took effect in 2021, and New York City, California, Washington, and other states and cities have followed. The EU Pay Transparency Directive requires member states to bring similar rules into national law by June 2026.

For anyone analysing jobs data, these laws changed what is available: a large share of postings in covered places now carry a range, which makes posted pay a current, market-wide signal next to self-reported salaries.
