What Applicant tracking system (ATS) means

An applicant tracking system is where a company's hiring happens: recruiters create openings, candidates apply, and interviews and offers are tracked. Most ATS products also publish the company's open jobs as a public job board, usually on a subdomain or embedded in the careers page.

Because the board is generated from the ATS, it is the most direct public record of a company's openings: roles appear there first, and disappear when they are filled or closed. Job aggregators such as Indeed collect from these boards and from direct postings.
