Rank tracking

Recording where a site appears in search results for a set of keywords, on a schedule, to see how its positions change.

Definition

What Rank tracking means

Rank tracking runs the same searches again and again, usually daily, and records the position of a domain for each keyword. The series shows the effect of changes to a site, of Google updates, and of competitors, which a single search cannot.

A position only means something with its settings: the country, language, device, and date it was measured in. Trackers fix those per keyword and store them with every reading, and many also record which SERP features appeared, since a knowledge panel or local pack above the results changes how many people click position 1.
